I was born in 1972 in the little town of Erdington in the West Midlands. Coming from a musical family, it became clear at an early age that I would be trudging the same path to enlightenment. The piano was my first instrument, which I began learning at the age of four, although I didn't like the teacher. She was an ex-head mistress of a school and used to scare me a little. She used to hit me across the knuckles with a spoon if my fingers weren't curved to just the right shape for playing. I gleaned the necessary information from her and got out while I still had working fingers, from there I decided to find my own musical direction. When I reached the ripe old age of ten, my parents split and I moved with my mother and sister down to sunny Cornwall, a move that I would still describe as the best thing that could have happened to me.
By the age of fourteen, I was fronting my own band and soon ventured onto the gig circuit which thrived in Cornwall. For the next few years I knuckled down and paid my dues by playing the circuit of working men’s clubs and British Legions with various bands including my own. Those were crazy times. I remember playing the Blue Circle Cement Club and going on after the bingo, even after the pre-recorded horse racing, you know you've hit the big time when ... We were playing all sorts of stuff in those days. I had a rock and roll band, I was raised on the Beatles and the Stones. I also played with various other bands in various styles from early indie to reggae and ska. Some of those gigs were hard work, but we were a hard working bunch, still keen and eager. Under those circumstances you will play 3 sets and bow to whatever the venue wants from you.
As time ticked on, I continued to play with as many people as possible and in as many styles as possible. I have done a string of session work, which is for the most part great fun as I get to play all sorts of things, and also get to play with some great musicians. I first met Larry through Krzysztof about 6 or 7 years ago. I had been recording with Krzysztof in a continuous working relationship and Larry was always in the studio with one project or another. There is a great 'everyone plays on everyone else’s music' kinda vibe, and we each have our part to play and our own area of expertise to bring to the table. When Larry first came with the Stonephace project I gladly got involved and very much enjoyed playing my parts for the album. It soon became evident that we would be taking it out on the road, and as a result I then got to meet Adrian. Once again I am surrounded by world class musicians, and it is a joy to be part of. What I love about the Stonephace project is that so much of it is about free improvising, especially the live show. It has been a long time since I have had the opportunity to mash the keyboard with the palms of my hands or hit it with my feet during my solo sections ... so nice to have that freedom to roam again, to create noise. Sometimes we forget how lucky we are.
